Divine sound is the cause of all manifestation. The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe.

Hazrat Inayat Khan

Invented by the French, brought to India by the British, this musical instrument has metamorphosed into the current version and has become an integral part of chanting mantras. Each and every mantra we sing with our mouths can be experienced within us in its subtle form. The harmonium is one of the instruments that can aid us to match the vibrational frequency of our inner rhythm and tune into our internal sounds and bring them into harmony. Paramhansa Yogananda called sound, “the most powerful force in the universe.”  Research has shown that when soothing music penetrates deeply into our consciousness, it has a healing effect.

Recognizing this divine link, Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Master encouraged the use of music as a medium to produce spiritual inspiration, a way to produce harmony, a way to find one’s lost inner rhythm. Starting with the Rabab, over time, musical instruments like the Tabla, the Harmonium and various forms of cymbals accompanied the singing of Gurbani (Sikh Scriptures).

This oil pastel and pen painting reflects on the omnipresence of the Divine sound vibrations within and without. The word, Waheguru – ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ – pronounced “Wah-hay-guroo”. Wah means Infinite, hay means Thou, and Guru means Higher Self, or the Divine Teacher within each sentient being.
